For years, studying in Australia meant packing your bags, leaving your family, and spending a huge amount of money on tuition, rent, and flights. That is now changing. Australian universities are opening full campuses inside India, and Indian students can earn a real Australian degree while living at home.
This shift became big news after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Australia in July 2026. During the visit, several new university deals were announced, and the partnership between the two countries in education grew stronger than ever.
What Actually Happened
During PM Modi's meeting with Australian PM Anthony Albanese in Melbourne, both countries signed a number of agreements to deepen ties in education. Two announcements stood out.
Flinders University received a Letter of Intent to set up a campus in Bengaluru. This campus is expected to open in early 2027 and will offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs in business, computer science, and information technology.
Victoria University received a Letter of Approval to open a campus in Gurugram, near Delhi. This campus is set to open in August 2026, much sooner, and will offer courses in business, IT, sports management, and research.
With these two additions, a total of eight Australian universities are now approved to operate in India. This is not a small trend anymore. It is becoming a real pathway for lakhs of students who want an international degree without leaving the country.
Why This Matters for Indian Students
1. Lower cost of education
Studying abroad is expensive once you add tuition, rent, food, and travel together. When an Australian university sets up campus in India, students pay Indian living costs while getting the same degree. This alone can save families a huge amount of money.
2. No visa stress
Getting an Australian student visa has become harder in recent years, and visa approval rates have dropped. By studying at a campus in India first, students remove this hurdle for at least part of their degree.
3. A genuine pathway to Australia, if you still want it
Many of these programs are designed so students can complete part of their degree in India and then move to Australia to finish it. Universities have also removed enrolment limits for such students, since they already completed part of the program overseas. So this is not an either or choice. Students can start local and still travel later if they want the full Australian campus experience.
4. Same degree, same recognition
These are not local franchises with a foreign name attached. They are official campuses of the parent university, and the degree students receive holds the same value as one earned in Melbourne or Adelaide.
5. More options across the country
With campuses now spread across Bengaluru, Gurugram, Delhi, and other cities, students from many parts of India will have more choices closer to home.
Why Australia Is Doing This
This is not just goodwill. India is Australia's second largest source of international students, with over 140,000 Indian students enrolled in Australian institutions last year. But visa restrictions in Australia have made it harder for students to travel there directly. So instead of only bringing students to Australia, Australian universities are now bringing their education to India.
As Australia's Education Minister Jason Clare put it, this is no longer a one way street. It used to be only about Indian students going to study in Australia. Now it is also about Australian universities bringing world class education directly to India.
What This Means Going Forward
If studying in Australia, or earning an internationally recognised degree, has been part of your plan, this is a development worth watching closely. More campuses are expected to open in the coming months, and more universities may follow the same path.
For students and parents who have always felt that overseas education was out of reach due to cost or visa difficulties, this creates a real, practical alternative. You get a globally respected degree, without leaving your home country, and without taking on the financial burden of studying abroad.
