Germany has always been a dream destination for Indian students. Mostly free or very low cost education, world class universities, and strong job prospects after graduation. That has not changed.
What has changed is how you get there. The process for Indian students has gone through some real updates, and a lot of people are still following advice from friends or old YouTube videos. That is a big problem.
Note: The core thing most people miss: Germany does not directly accept Class 12 qualifications from India. You need to go through an extra process called APS certification and choose one of two routes into a German university.
What is the APS Certificate and why does everyone need it?
APS stands for Academic Evaluation Centre. It is a German government body that checks whether your Indian academic certificates are genuine and meet German standards.
Every Indian student applying to a German university must get this certificate. No exceptions. Without it, your application will not even be considered.
Good news: APS processing has gotten much faster. It used to take 4 to 6 months. Now it is often done in just 3 to 4 weeks. So the wait is no longer the dealbreaker it once was.
There are mainly 2 routes to study in Germany from India
Once you have your APS certificate sorted, you will choose one of these two paths:
Here is what each one actually means for you.
Route 1: Studienkolleg (foundation year)
This is for students who just finished Class 12 and want to go to Germany without doing any college in India first.
The Studienkolleg is a one year preparatory program offered in Germany itself. It bridges the gap between your Indian schooling and German university entry requirements. Think of it as a foundation year on German soil.
You will need strong Class 12 scores and your APS Certificate to be considered for Studienkolleg programs.
Route 2: Direct entry (after 1 year of bachelor's in India)
This is the more popular route right now. You complete one year of your bachelor's degree in India and then use that, along with your Class 12 scores and APS Certificate, to apply directly to German universities.
So if you scored low in Class 12 and thought your college year would cancel that out, it does not work that way. Both sets of marks are checked.
Your college in India matters more than you think
This is something a lot of students completely overlook. If you are taking the Direct Entry route, the bachelor's college you attend in India will be checked carefully.
Germany uses a database called Anabin to verify international universities and institutions. If your college is not recognized on Anabin, or if it is not properly approved by the UGC in India, you could face serious problems during your APS application.
Note: If your university is not properly UGC approved or not recognized on Anabin, APS problems can happen. This can delay or even reject your application entirely.
Before you plan anything around Germany, make sure you verify these two critical points:
- Check whether your current Indian university is officially listed and recognized on the Anabin database.
- Confirm that your college and course are properly approved by the UGC (University Grants Commission).
If you are unsure, search your university name directly on the Anabin database and cross-check it with the official UGC website. Never assume. Always verify.
APS is now much faster and that changes everything
Here is the one genuinely positive update: the APS processing time has improved dramatically.
This used to be one of the biggest headaches. Students had to plan almost half a year ahead just for APS. Now it is often done in a matter of weeks, which gives you much more flexibility in your timeline.
